Defects in yttrium aluminium perovskite and garnet crystals: atomistic study

Native and impurity point defects in both yttrium aluminium perovskite (YAP) and garnet (YAG) crystals are studied in the framework of the pair-potential approximation coupled with the shell model description of the lattice ions. The calculated formation energies for native defects suggest that the antisite disorder is preferred over the Frenkel and Schottky-like disorder in both YAP and YAG. The calculated values of the distortion caused by the antisite YAl x in the lattice turn out to be in an excellent agreement with the EXAFS measurements. New Regularization Method for EXAFS Analysis

As an alternative to the analysis of EXAFS spectra by conventional shell fitting, the Tikhonov regularization method has been proposed. An improved algorithm that utilizes a priori information about the sample has been developed and applied to the analysis of U L3‐edge spectra of soddyite, (UO2)2SiO4⋅2H2O, and of U(VI) sorbed onto kaolinite. The partial radial distribution functions g1(UU), g2(USi), and g3(UO) of soddyite agree with crystallographic values and previous EXAFS results.

Large left ventricular metastatis in patient with liposarcoma.

Abstract Metastasis to the heart and pericardium are rare. We present a 44-year-old male with pleural dedifferentiated liposarcoma and multiple metastases, with no previous cardiological history and/or cardiac symptoms. A transthoracic echocardiogram during the advanced stage of disease showed a lobulated, large and mobile mass, with homogeneous echogenicity, attached to the basal posterior wall of the left ventricle via a broad base and with intracavitary growth. This mass extends to inferolateral and inferoseptal wall of the left ventricle.

Recognition of N-Alkyl- and N-Aryl-Acetamides by N-Alkyl Ammonium Resorcinarene Chlorides

N-alkyl ammonium resorcinarene chlorides are stabilized by an intricate array of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds that leads to cavitand-like structures. Depending on the upper-rim substituents, self-inclusion was observed in solution and in the solid state. The self-inclusion can be disrupted at higher temperatures, whereas in the presence of small guests the self-included dimers spontaneously reorganize to 1:1 host-guest complexes. Giant hepatic hydatid cyst as a cause of small bowel obstruction.

Today, giant hydatid cysts are fairly rare even in endemic areas. We describe a case of an extremely large hydatid cyst of the liver that was causing massive compression of the neighboring organs, giving rise to a subocclusive syndrome of the intestine. After considering the various approaches available for the treatment of this disease, it was decided that radical surgery was still the best therapeutic choice, especially when extremely large cysts are involved. In particular, in clinical situations where it is difficult to perform radical surgical procedures, less aggressive surgery followed by drug treatment should be the treatment of choice.

Ecotoxicity assessment of natural attenuation effects at a historical dumping site in the western Baltic Sea.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s of the past century, industrial waste material highly enriched in various contaminants (heavy metals, PAHs) was dumped in the inner Mecklenburg Bay, western Baltic Sea. Large-scale shifts in the spatial distribution of heavy metals in surface sediments were mapped by geochemical monitoring in the mid-1980s and 12 years later in 1997. A further study in 2001 was designed to investigate the small-scale spatial distribution of contaminants inside, on top of, and around the historical dumping ground and to examine possible effects to benthic organisms (Arctica islandica, microbiological toxicity tests). Retroaortic left renal vein joining the left common iliac vein

Retroaortic left renal vein joining the left common iliac vein is a rare congenital anomaly in the development of the inferior vena cava. To our knowledge, only one case has been reported in the literature; however, its imaging features have never been described. A 27-year-old male presented with a 1-year history of recurrent right flank pain, dysuria, hematuria, and fever (39 degrees C). Computed tomography and MR venography showed a retroaortic left renal vein joining the left common iliac vein. We present the CT and MR venography findings and discuss their feasibility in showing this congenital anomaly.

Effects of physical activity on bone properties, when controlled for genetic effects, are not fully understood. We aimed to study the association between long-term leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and bone properties using twin pairs known to be discordant for leisure time physical activity for at least 30 yr. Combining EXAFS and XRay Powder Diffraction to Solve Structures Containing Heavy Atoms

Determination of structures using x-ray powder diffraction is complicated if the reflection intensities are mainly influenced by the scattering from heavy atoms and the atomic coordinates of light atoms remain uncertain. A method like EXAFS, which is sensitive to short range order, gives reliable atomic distances in the surroundings of heavy atoms with a precision of ±0.02 A. The probability for obtaining the complete structure from x-ray powder diffraction increases if one includes parameters derived from EXAFS measurements as restraints during the procedure of structure solving.
